Embracing habit in an automated world
by Meghan O’Gieblyn
Repetition is a component of all ascetic traditions, and I like to think that my own habits constitute something like a spiritual discipline. My nature bends toward listlessness and disorder. Resolving to do the same thing each day, at the same time, has given my life a center, insulating me from the siren song of novelty and distraction that has caused me so much unhappiness in the past.
Yacouba Sawadogo, The Man Who Stopped The Desert, Burkina Faso
Robinwho:
Now that's someone who cooked. 🌱
In the 1980s, while drought was turning northern Burkina Faso into barren land, farmer Yacouba Sawadogo had a different idea: let's grow a forest!
He revived an old farming technique called zaï, digging small pits to catch rainwater and help plants grow. People thought he was crazy. Someone even set fire to his trees 😡.
He kept planting anyway.
Forty years later, the result? Nearly 40 hectares of forest, with more than 60 species of trees and shrubs. And he didn't keep the trick to himself—he taught other farmers how to bring their own land back to life.
He earned a UN environmental award along the way, but the forest is the real trophy.
Sawadogo passed away in 2023. His trees are still growing.
The first Goldsberry Efficiency Landscape chart just dropped. Well played, well played.
Robinwho:
well played
Happy for Finch (finally got a PG!!!) and the Wolves. Imagine them with Ant and Donte back.
Jazz need JJJ back ASAP.
Bulls will likely get better.
Hornets? Not sure but love Naz Reid.
Warriors did surprise me.
Magic are already very injured LOL.
Be Nice
Beaver Trust: A small charity with a big ambition to restore beavers to regenerate landscapes across UK
Robinwho:
Please read up on how beavers were driven to almost extinction. It's disgusting. For full disclosure, I love beavers.
Beavers are excellent builders. Unfortunately, humans haven't always appreciated their construction projects.
After being hunted to extinction in Britain centuries ago, beavers are making a comeback, and Beaver Trust is helping them settle back in.
The charity restores habitats, helps people live alongside their industrious neighbors, and even offers professional beaver management training. Yes, you can actually study beaver management!
More beavers, healthier wetlands, happier rivers. A better world.
Read The Ugly Duckling at Noli’s place when he was making dinner. Having some questions, I went to visit Mr. Andersen after I ate.
Mr. Andersen was home watering plants. I introduced myself and asked him why he thought swans were superior to ducks. I was concerned because it was divisive. Ducks were just as beautiful because every bird was beautiful. Bald eagles a bit less, but still better than non-birds.
He couldn’t come up with an answer.
I shouted bird solidarity and then left. It was late and Mommy would be mad if I missed bedtime.
